Cree: Improve performance and reduce costs to meet the needs of segmented applications

Text / "High-tech LED" reporter Tang Guirong
In May of this year, Cree increased the light efficiency of the white LED laboratory to 231 lm/W, further promoting the development of the industry and lighting. "From a physics point of view, although things have extreme values, Cree will continue to increase R&D, and it is likely to break through 231 lm/W in the future," said Norbert Hiller, vice president and general manager of LED components at Cree. LED reporter.

The efficacy of LEDs has been improving, and scientists have predicted that 200 lm/W is the highest luminous efficacy. Norbert has reason to be excited, because last year, Cree has broken through 200 lm/W of light efficiency and achieved mass production of 160 lm/W.

In the face of this year's decline in chip prices and the increase in lumens per dollar, Norbert did not show much concern. "Price decline is an inevitable trend, but lighting is a system, and price reduction does not push everything. Its Development also includes factors such as drive, optical design, thermal performance, reliability, etc. Only when developed as a whole can the market be truly active."

In the interview, Norbert has always stressed that light efficiency and lumens are only two aspects of each dollar, depending on whether it is suitable for promoting the entire LED lighting, whether it has greater penetration.

LED light efficiency value and application balance

At present, Cree's production technology, the highest mass production efficiency is 160 lm / W. According to Cree's past experience, the 231lm/W light efficiency can be mass-produced in two to four years.

For some industry players to pay too much attention to light effects, Norbert bluntly, light efficiency is only one aspect, but also combined with its specific application.

In the early stage of Career, the focus was on improving industrialization and improving light efficiency. From the current application fields, light efficiency has basically been able to meet user needs.

Regarding how to promote the consistency of light efficiency and application, Norbert proposed that Cree pays great attention to the application range of light effect while improving the light effect value, making it suitable for the lighting field that has not been applied yet. Recently, Cree has launched a new high-efficiency MT-G, which can be applied to MR-16. At present, the optical output of MR-16 is mostly at 280-300 lm, and the application range is small. But when the optical output of the MR-16 can be increased to more than 500 lm, it can completely replace the traditional 50W MR-16.

Undoubtedly, the entire application level will be completely changed after the use of targeted high-efficiency LED packaging devices.

For indoor lighting, Norbert told the high-tech LED reporter that CXA2011, a multi-chip package product developed by Cree, is responding to market demand and making internal adjustments from the product application level. Single-chip packaged devices can be used in many ways, but some applications use multi-chip package devices to improve its performance and efficiency.
