Electric cars are not reliable, not as good as traditional fuel cars, Tesla is angry
The automotive industry is rapidly shifting toward new energy sources, but some critics argue that electric vehicles (EVs) still lag behind traditional fuel-powered cars in terms of reliability. This sentiment has sparked frustration among EV manufacturers, particularly Tesla, which has long championed the future of sustainable transportation.
According to a recent report by *Consumer Reports*, while automakers are integrating features like in-car streaming and advanced technologies to improve fuel efficiency, these innovations often come at the cost of vehicle reliability. A survey of 640,000 vehicles revealed that cars equipped with newer tech tend to have less stable engines and transmissions compared to their conventional counterparts. Some high-tech models have even experienced complete failures.
User complaints about EVs frequently center on issues with continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) and 8- or 9-speed automatics—designed to boost fuel economy—but these can be frustrating for drivers. The infotainment systems in many modern cars have also drawn criticism, though over-the-air updates have helped resolve some of these problems.
Despite these challenges, *Consumer Reports* highlights that certain electric vehicles, such as the Tesla Model 3 and the Chevrolet Bolt, are performing better than expected. Jake Fisher, head of automotive testing at the magazine, noted that EVs can eliminate some of the less popular mechanical components found in traditional cars. Although the Model 3 faced production hurdles, its overall quality remains solid due to the proven technology used in the Model S. The Bolt, meanwhile, is considered the most reliable model in General Motors’ lineup.
In its annual survey, *Consumer Reports* predicts that new vehicles from major manufacturers will outperform their competitors. This ranking holds significant influence among both consumers and industry leaders. Toyota once again topped the “Most Reliable Cars†list for the fifth year in a row, while Tesla ranked 21st and Cadillac placed last among 27 models.
Tesla responded to the report by criticizing *Consumer Reports*, pointing out that the publication had previously praised the Model S as the best car ever but later retracted that claim after facing pushback from Tesla. The company stated, “*Consumer Reports* has never truly driven a Model 3, let alone gained a real understanding of its design and mechanics.â€
As the industry continues to evolve, the debate between innovation and reliability remains central to the conversation around electric vehicles.
