Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a protein composed of 211 amino acids that is commonly added to the end of recombinant proteins for purification or detection purposes. Unlike histidine tags, which may cause non-specific binding and hinder affinity purification, GST has high specificity for its substrate, glutathione, allowing for higher purity in the final product.

Precautions:
The GST tag has mild elution conditions, helping to preserve protein activity and is suitable for pull-down experiments. It offers a good linear dynamic range but has a relatively large molecular weight, which might affect protein function and downstream applications. If the protein is insoluble, denaturation-based purification may be challenging.
