Robot picks up courier companies and fights for the "Picking War"
How to Handle Excessive Express Deliveries? Robots Are Sorting It Out
As the Double 11 shopping festival approaches, courier companies are preparing for a massive surge in deliveries. To ensure that your packages don’t get stuck on the way, many companies are introducing advanced technologies and strategies to streamline the process.
In recent days, reporters visited several courier centers and found that some companies are investing heavily in intelligent sorting systems. What used to require thousands of workers can now be done by just 50-60 people. Some companies have even deployed small yellow robots to sort packages, significantly improving efficiency. One company even offered a reward of 300 yuan for every person introduced who could work for at least a month.
This year’s Double 11 is expected to bring record-breaking volumes. According to Zhao Chengbing, assistant to the general manager of Shentong Zhengzhou Sorting Center, the courier volume in Henan this year is about 1.3 times that of last year. Yuantong Express reported that their daily delivery volume last year was close to 2 million pieces, and this year it may reach 2.6 million. Zhongtong Express also estimated that during the Double 11 period, the total shipments destined for Henan and outbound from Henan will reach 4 million.
To cope with the demand, many courier companies are offering better wages, accommodations, and meal services to attract more staff. Courier Xiao Zhang, who was recently hired by Zhongtong, said the generous treatment was a big factor in his decision. Zhongtong has also increased peak season allowances by 300–500 yuan per person.
In addition to hiring more workers, some companies are using referral bonuses to encourage current employees to bring in new talent. For example, Zhongtong offers a 300-yuan reward if someone can work for a full month. Even online stores are encouraging salespeople to recruit friends and family, offering extra pay for those who help.
Shentong has also recruited temporary workers through labor agencies and provided introduction fees for successful referrals. So far, they’ve already hired over 500 people. They’ve also set up mobile teams to respond quickly to any additional needs during the peak season.
Beyond human resources, smart technology is playing a key role. At Shentong’s Zhengzhou Sorting Center, 350 small yellow robots are working efficiently. These robots can sort 18,000 packages per hour, greatly reducing the need for manual labor. Each robot uses a ranging sensing system to navigate without collisions and delivers packages accurately to the correct ports.
According to Zhao Chengbing, the robots can check barcodes and send packages to the right destination. When multiple robots are moving at once, they politely give way to each other. The system not only improves efficiency but also saves around 70 workers per day.
Other companies, like Yuantong and Zhongtong, have also invested in smart sorting systems. Yuantong spent over 7 million yuan on an automated system, which can handle up to 20,000 packages per hour. Previously, such tasks required 100–150 workers, but now only 40 are needed. Zhongtong’s sorting systems can process 15,000 to 30,000 packages per hour, cutting the workforce from thousands to just 50.
Couriers are also being supported with better logistics. Zhongtong has added nearly 100 17-meter-long dump trucks and signed agreements with freight companies to ensure smooth operations. Yuantong has doubled its courier team, while Shentong has expanded its warehouse space and increased the number of vehicles.
Despite the massive increase in deliveries, companies say delays won’t be widespread. With advanced technology, efficient staffing, and improved logistics, they’re confident that packages will arrive on time. As the Double 11 rush begins, the focus is on making sure that every gift reaches its destination safely and quickly.
