LED lighting: basic circuit design can be completed in as little as one day Semiconductor manufacturers are also involved in the LED lighting business. LED power circuits require driver ICs, and many semiconductor manufacturers have introduced a variety of products. Under the situation that manufacturers compete to improve the drive capability and efficiency of driver ICs and achieve more functions, National Semiconductor not only makes these features available, but also reduces the difficulty of power circuit design. Using the company's online design aid "WEBENCH" developed for power supply circuits, etc., the basic circuit design including the selection of the driver mode, the selection of the driver IC, the circuit design and the circuit simulation can be completed in one day (Fig. 8, Figure 9). The driver IC can only use the company's products, but LEDs, capacitors and inductors can be selected from a variety of products from major manufacturers. WEBENCH can be used free of charge. If most equipment developers use this tool for circuit design, it will help the national semiconductor production of driver ICs to expand applications. Design and simulation work can be completed in a single day. The selection of components and drive methods represented by LEDs, the selection of driver ICs, and the circuit design can all be performed online, and the simulation of electrical characteristics and thermal characteristics can also be performed online. Including lighting and backlights, the number of applications in which WEBENCH has been applied to LED power circuits has increased dramatically in the past year, reaching about 1/7 to 1/6 of the overall use case of WEBENCH. Many designers lack experience in power supply design based on LED driver ICs, and it is estimated that these designers are using WEBENCH for design. For inexperienced designers, finding the best components from many driver ICs, LEDs, and passive components, and then designing the best circuit can be a heavy workload. Sometimes it takes even a few weeks to design the basic circuit. When designing LED lighting fixtures, LEDs as light sources and optical components for achieving desired radiation characteristics are valued. The design of the power supply circuit is often pushed back, but "I often hear examples of smooth progress in optical design, but fall down due to the final power circuit design" (National Semiconductor Corporation of Japan). This situation has also played a positive role in expanding the application of WEBENCH. WEBENCH can display any of the cost, efficiency and installation area as a priority, while considering the five circuits that balance the three projects. The user can select the desired circuit from it. In terms of simulation, there are characteristics that respond to changes in input power, operations during dimming, operations at startup, and circuit characteristic simulations in a steady state. The user can optimize the circuit while changing the components. The various simulations can be completed in about 5 minutes, so there is no impact on the design.
