Baidu Wang Jin: I hope that the safety of unmanned vehicles is one hundred times that of human driving.

On November 15th, with the official opening of the 3rd World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Baidu’s unmanned vehicles were officially opened for trials on Wuzhenzi Night Road.

During the test ride, Wang Jin, senior vice president of Baidu and general manager of the Autopilot Division, said that the development status, future strategy and current challenges of Baidu unmanned vehicles were introduced.

Today, Baidu unmanned vehicles carried out the actual test of the fully open urban road in Wuzhenzi Night Road, Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, and took the Baidu unmanned vehicle. The entire test ride process is about 10 minutes, and the length of the journey is three kilometers. The unmanned vehicle completes the driving behaviors such as parallel, overtaking, U-turn, and identification of traffic lights on the test section.

On December 8 last year, the unmanned vehicle developed by Baidu completed the auto-driving road test with a total length of 30 kilometers and a duration of 40 minutes on Beijing Jingxin Expressway and Fifth Ring Road. Wang Jin introduced that the road test in Wuzhen today has been greatly improved compared to last year's road test, because last year it was mainly on the expressway, and the road conditions on the expressway were relatively simple. The road to the road test is an open road to the city, meaning that more will happen.

Wang Jin introduced that Baidu unmanned vehicles have encountered the situation that there are gravel vehicles retrograde in the road test, but Baidu unmanned vehicles successfully responded to this situation. “This road test reflects our technical confidence.”

The Baidu unmanned vehicle project was launched in 2013. On December 14, 2015, Baidu established the Autopilot Division, and Wang Jin, Senior Vice President, became the General Manager of the Business Division. In 2016, Baidu launched a number of project cooperation, and signed a cooperation agreement with Wuhu City to build the world's first all-vehicle operation area; and build a driverless demonstration area with Shanghai International Automobile City. In September 2016, he obtained the California Driverless Vehicle Road Test License and completed his first public road test in California in October 2016.

For the future development strategy of Baidu unmanned vehicles, Wang Jin said that Baidu does not necessarily enter the automobile industry, but hopes to promote the development of the industrial chain. "We hope to cooperate, not that we have to do it ourselves, and we are too tired to do anything. It is good that we have done this system well. Baidu is positioning itself as a provider of unmanned vehicles."

"Why is Baidu the provider of the entire unmanned vehicle? Because the future responsible person, such as an accident, if I am driving the system, then whether the car factory is responsible or Baidu is responsible, it is not clear, we tell the car factory, this matter Baidu is completely responsible, so we told him that we are the owner of this car."

In the first half of this year, when Google Alpha Dog and Korean Go player Li Shizhen took the fourth game of the human-machine war, there was a black box problem in machine learning, which also caused concern: Does the black box problem of machine learning mean that automatic driving will involve risks? Still need manual intervention.

Wang Jin does not recognize this view. He believes that the black box problem needs to be dealt with through technology and procedures. It needs a backup system, and Baidu unmanned vehicles are also testing how much redundancy is needed. Once the switchboard crashes, there is a small computer that can take over the car, take the car in a matter of milliseconds and drive to the side of the road.

"I think it is very unreliable to use people to back up this system. I don't think it is a feasible solution to use people to do automatic driving."

Baidu's goal for the unmanned vehicle project is three-year mass production and five-year commercial use, but there are doubts about this target: whether mass production and commercialization can be realized in such a short period of time.

In the face of doubts, Wang Jin said, "We propose this goal based on the mature curve of our technology. At this time last year, we went to find many car manufacturers. They also think that there will be driverless cars coming out after 2030. Most of them today. It is also said to be five years. So now there are at least 19 companies in the entire industry, including Google, Uber, and Germany's three major, the United States' three major, basically saying that they will come out in five years."

Wang Jin introduced that Baidu's definition of five-year commercial production for five years is that after five years of mass production, it is all rolled out. If you want to buy a driverless car, you can buy it back.

However, Wang Jin also admits that there are still two dimensions of challenges from the goal realization. He focuses on the technical challenges, the technology still has a lot of room for improvement, and there are many long tail situations that need to be considered.

In addition to the timetable, Wang Jin has a target for Baidu unmanned vehicles. He said that he hopes that the safety of Baidu unmanned vehicles will be one hundred times that of human drivers, and the development rate of future safety accidents will drop drastically.

At present, Baidu's unmanned vehicle technology is mainly implemented by cooperating with the car manufacturer to modify the vehicle system. However, due to the difference in manufacturing standards or technical interfaces between each car and each car manufacturer, Baidu unmanned vehicles may also be like the Android system. Faced with the problem of fragmentation of operation and inconsistent experience.

Regarding this issue, Wang Jin said that Baidu is also discussing whether it is to limit several models to make targeted adaptations, or to put forward some requirements for auto manufacturers.

"We are really exploring, we are also watching what changes the car has the greatest impact on the unmanned car system, we ask him not to change."
