UNEP announces the first international mercury pollution prevention convention

Global production and trade of mercury-containing products will be monitored and restricted to reduce environmental damage and human health impacts of mercury pollution.

Certain types of fluorescent lamps are included in the mercury-containing products that are banned from production and import and export by 2020. The parties will sign the convention from October this year, and 50 countries will enter into force after they are signed.

According to industry insiders, straight tube fluorescent lamps and circular fluorescent lamps such as thin tube diameters such as T5 and T8 are more likely to exceed the mercury content due to the manual mercury injection process.
