Two-machine interconnection refers to the direct connection between two computers. This type of connection can be achieved through various methods, such as network card interconnection, serial port connection, parallel port connection, Modem connection, infrared communication, and USB connection. In this article, we will focus on remote dual-machine interconnection using a Modem.
What is a Modem?
A Modem, short for Modulator-Demodulator, is commonly known as a "cat." It is a hardware device that allows digital data from a computer to be converted into analog signals suitable for transmission over a standard telephone line. These signals are then received by another Modem at the other end of the line, where they are converted back into digital form that the receiving computer can understand.
Computers communicate using binary digits (0s and 1s), while telephone lines transmit only analog electrical signals. Therefore, when two computers need to exchange data over a telephone line, a Modem is essential for converting digital signals into analog ones and vice versa.
The process of converting digital signals to analog is called "modulation," and the reverse process—converting analog back to digital—is known as "demodulation." Through this modulation and demodulation cycle, computers can communicate remotely over telephone lines.
Modems are widely used in data communication within telephone networks. They play a crucial role in network connectivity and remote access. Modern Modems are equipped with advanced features like signal adaptation, data compression, and efficient modulation techniques. They can achieve data transfer rates up to 56 kbps, which is very close to the theoretical maximum for traditional phone lines.
Steps for Remote Modem Interconnection
1. **Install the Dial-Up Network Server on an NT Server**
Go to Control Panel > Network > Network Settings > Add Software > Network Software > Remote Access Service. Follow the installation wizard. During setup, you can choose whether the system should automatically detect the Modem or manually configure it.
When selecting the port usage mode, you can choose between "Only dial out" (client-only), "Receive only" (server-only), or "Dial out and receive" (both client and server). Configure the device settings and set up the RAS network. After completing the configuration, restart the computer to apply the changes.
2. **Install a Dial-Up Network Client on a Windows Workstation**
Go to Add/Remove Programs > Install Windows > Communications > Details > Dial-up Network > OK. Once installed, the Dial-Up Networking folder will appear under My Computer.
3. **Establish the Connection**
Open "My Computer" > "Dial-up Networking" > "New Connection." Follow the wizard to enter details such as the name of the remote computer, Modem model, area code, phone number, and country code. After finishing, a new icon will appear in the Dial-Up Networking window. Double-clicking it will connect you to the remote server.
