Infineon Introduces LITIX Basic LED Driver Series for Automotive Exterior LED Lighting

Munich, Germany, March 9, 2015 – Today, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) introduces the LITIXTM Basic family of LED drivers for low- and medium-power automotive exterior lighting applications. This highly integrated family of LED drivers reduces system complexity and improves the reliability of steering, taillights, parking and reversing LED lights. With reduced part count and more features than discrete designs, the LITIX Basic Series enables automakers to expand their brand-specific LED lighting systems with enhanced safety features.

The LITIX Basic series provides precise current control over a wide voltage range. The family includes 15 pin-compatible 1-3 output channel linear current sources rated at 60 to 180 mA. In addition to stable and reliable LED brightness, the LITIX Basic series includes versions that support advanced diagnostics directly at the LED point of load. This enables automakers to achieve the highest possible lighting quality.

Reduce system complexity

Today, most LED taillight designs still use discrete resistors to control LED illumination. In addition to higher system costs, this adds to the complexity of the system. In addition, the reliability of LED taillights is reduced due to the large number of discrete components, and auto parts manufacturers occasionally have to deal with soldering failures. With the LITIX Basic family of devices, the number of PCB components can be reduced by approximately 40%, which reduces the risk of failure and saves money during the design and assembly phases.

Pin compatible and expandable

By introducing the automotive industry-certified LITIX Basic series, Infineon became the first semiconductor supplier to offer a portfolio of 15 scalable LED drivers in the same package. This allows the series to easily adapt the design to new LED configurations when demand changes, such as output current or fault detection requirements change. In addition, a single device load current of up to 180mA can be easily achieved by connecting multiple LITIX Basic LED drivers in parallel. All devices in the LITIX Basic family feature overload and overtemperature protection, as well as a wide range of supply voltages from 5.5V to 40V.

For devices with integrated diagnostics, SC (short-circuit), OL (open-circuit load), or N-1 (inter-device diagnostic bus) functions can be selected for LED fault detection. The LITIX Basic driver is suitable for centralized diagnostics and decentralized diagnostics. Centralized diagnostics means that fault diagnosis is controlled by a centralized body control module, while decentralized diagnostics enable real-time fault detection. In a decentralized architecture, the LITIX Basic LED driver communicates with the microcontroller, and the microcontroller can be installed in an additional module in or near the taillight. Whether it's a centralized or decentralized architecture, the LITIX Basic LED driver's functionality ensures fast identification of fault lights for quick access. This not only meets the safety functions and legal requirements, but also helps to maintain the car's appearance as designed by the car manufacturer, thus presenting a high-quality image of the car brand. The LITIX Basic LED driver also features PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), which makes it easy to use one lamp, such as the stop light and taillight functions.

Andreas Doll, vice president and general manager of the automotive body power products division of Infineon Technologies AG, said: "The LITIX Basic LED driver series is an important milestone for us to grasp the automotive LED market opportunity. This promising market is expected in the next few years. Achieving double-digit growth. The advantages of the LITIX system have been recognized by many car manufacturers around the world."

Availability and packaging

The 15 LITIX Basic LED drivers are now in volume production. The LITIX Basic series features a lead-free "green" SSOP package that is RoHS compliant (the Directive on Restricting the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) with 14 pins and exposed pad.

About the LITIX series

The LITIX Basic series is a member of the LITIX LED driver family for automotive applications. In addition to the just-launched LITIX Basic series for low- and medium-power automotive exterior lighting applications, the LITIX family includes the LITIX Linear series and the LITIX Power series. The LITIX Linear series is designed for low to high power applications, including taillights and low cost headlamps. The LITIX Power Series DC/DC controllers are designed for high power applications, including LED daytime running lights and LED low beam and high beam lights.
