Apple's new patent: a stylus that can feed back the texture of the screen display

The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) passed an Apple-based touch technology that simulates surface textures through tactile feedback. This patent details a stylus input device, the stylus onboard The electronic device can detect the contact with the touch screen and obtain the information displayed on the touch screen, and simulate the texture on the display on the stylus through the vibration feedback effect.

In some instances, the stylus includes a touch sensor to determine if the device is in contact with the screen, and other functions rely on pressing the sensor, camera, and the like. Photodiode sensors are also used to determine the texture on the depicted screen, such as wood, paper, glass, and more. The texture effect on the display can communicate with the stylus via Bluetooth or WiFi.

When the texture is detected, the stylus will transmit vibrations, audible alerts or other signals to the user via a force feedback mechanism. The feedback profile can vary greatly depending on the texture. Apple proposes a hierarchical experience in which the feedback profile changes dynamically as a different part of the surface of the stylus moving a screen. For example, users will perceive different levels of feedback because they write in a displayed scene depicting wood, parchment and glass. Furthermore, the system is capable of adjusting the haptic output according to the angle or orientation based on the writing pressure as its sensory variation.

Rumor has it that Apple is preparing to equip the iPad Pro with a stylus and plans to release the iPad Pro this fall. K.K.’s Guo Mingchi predicted that the original iPad Pro would not have much functionality, but it will be added in the next few generations.
