KAF-1300 image sensor, the world's first digital SLR camera

At the start of this summer, our KAF-1300 image sensor was honored in the prestigious flagship magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and became the first chip to be inducted into the IEEE Spectrum Hall of Fame. The Chip Hall of Fame celebrates the most groundbreaking and influential microchips throughout history, along with the visionaries behind them. In 1991, the KAF-1300 played a key role in creating the world's first digital SLR camera, which is why it was chosen for this special recognition. Back in the early 1990s, having a million pixels was nothing short of revolutionary. It was a number that seemed almost impossible at the time, and it helped digital cameras challenge the dominance of film. The KAF-1300, developed by Kodak's Image Sensors Division (now part of ON Semiconductor), exceeded the 1.3 megapixel mark, making it possible to print clear images up to 5" x 7". When integrated into the DCS-100 camera system, it was mounted on the back of a Nikon F3 film camera and connected to a bulky 5 kg portable storage unit worn on the shoulder. Despite its size, the DCS-100 introduced many features we now take for granted in modern digital photography—like a screen for previewing images, histogram analysis, a removable battery for remote use, and even a phone modem to transmit photos from the field. All of this came at a price tag of just $20,000, which was still a lot, but considered a game-changer at the time. The KAF-1300 laid the foundation for future CCD image sensors, driving innovation in digital photography and enabling high-quality imaging across a wide range of applications. Although the chip is no longer in production, its chief designer, Eric Stevens, remains a senior engineer in the Image Sensors division, working on next-generation pixel designs for upcoming products. The legacy of the KAF-1300 continues to inspire and shape the future of imaging technology.

200W Solar Panel

solar panel

A solar cell panel, solar electric panel, photo-voltaic (PV) module, PV panel or Solar Panel is an assembly of photovoltaic solar cells mounted in a (usually rectangular) frame, and a neatly organised collection of PV panels is called a photovoltaic system or solar array. Solar panels capture sunlight as a source of radiant energy, which is converted into electric energy in the form of direct current (DC) electricity.
