BOE's first flexible AMOLED will ship at the end of October 2017

In May of this year, reports surfaced that BOE had started producing flexible OLEDs at its newly built 6th-generation (B7) plant in Chengdu. While this development is seen as a positive step, a recent report from Japan suggests that BOE aims to ship its first flexible OLEDs from the Chengdu facility by the end of October 2017. This timeline indicates the company's strong push into the flexible display market. The new Chengdu plant has a monthly production capacity of 45,000 units, which is sufficient to meet the annual demand for approximately 90 million smartphone-sized AMOLED panels. However, initial production volumes are expected to be lower due to the complexities of manufacturing flexible displays. In addition to the Chengdu plant, BOE announced in October 2016 the construction of another 6th-generation OLED factory in Mianyang. The Mianyang plant will also have a monthly output of 45,000 units and is scheduled to start operations in 2019. The total investment for the Mianyang project is estimated at 46.5 billion yuan, highlighting BOE’s long-term commitment to expanding its OLED capabilities. It remains unclear exactly what types of displays will be produced at these facilities, but industry insiders believe they may focus on a mix of smartphone-sized screens and wearable devices. In May 2016, BOE showcased several new AMOLED prototypes, including a 4.35-inch flexible and foldable OLED display. The flexible panel features a resolution of 1120 x 480 (HWVGA, 280 PPI), a bend radius of 15 mm, brightness of 350 nits, and a color gamut of 100% NTSC. The foldable version shares the same specs, except it can bend with a much tighter radius of 5 mm. Another notable prototype was a 9.55-inch transparent flexible panel, demonstrated by BOE in June 2015. Alongside it, a 4.8-inch 480×800 flexible panel was also displayed, showing the company's progress in developing larger, more versatile flexible screen technologies. These developments suggest that BOE is not only focusing on volume production but also exploring new form factors and applications for OLED technology. As the demand for flexible and transparent displays continues to grow, BOE’s investments in multiple locations across China position it well to capture a significant share of the market.
