The world's first neuron AI chip with olfactory and identifiable explosive odor

While the field of artificial intelligence continues to push boundaries in replicating human-like capabilities, certain functions remain challenging for machines to master, particularly the sense of smell. In a groundbreaking development reported by the Daily Mail, scientists in Nigeria have engineered Koniku Kore, the world’s first neural AI chip designed to mimic olfactory senses and identify specific odors, including those of explosives. This innovation represents a significant leap forward in blending biology with technology. The Koniku Kore chip stands apart from conventional silicon-based processors. Instead, it integrates live neurons derived from mice, each neuron seamlessly fused with silicon components. Equipped with sensors capable of detecting and distinguishing various scents, the chip holds immense potential. Future applications could involve embedding it within robotic systems, enabling them to perform tasks like identifying volatile chemicals or even detecting diseases through scent recognition. Recognizing this limitation, researchers led by Nigerian neuroscientist Oshiorenoya Agabi are exploring ways to combine laboratory-grown neurons with electronic circuits. Their current model reportedly emulates the activity of 204 brain neurons. Agabi explained, “Rather than attempting to recreate neuronal functions mechanically, we leverage the inherent capabilities of biological cells. While this approach may seem radical, the outcomes so far have been nothing short of extraordinary.” This revolutionary technology made its debut at the recent TEDGlobal conference held in Tanzania. Attendees were captivated by the prospect of merging neuroscience with AI, envisioning a future where machines possess sensory abilities previously thought exclusive to living organisms.
