Siemens launches its first distributed photovoltaic project in China
Recently, the rooftop distributed photovoltaic project at Shanghai Siemens Line Protection System Co., Ltd. (referred to as the line company) officially went online. This marks Siemens' first internal demonstration project aimed at promoting distributed energy solutions in China. Located in Jinshan District, Shanghai, the line company primarily focuses on producing Siemens circuit breakers and other electrical products.
The newly installed distributed photovoltaic system boasts a capacity of 300 kilowatts, spanning across 2,000 square meters of the factory’s rooftop. The project was successfully connected to the grid on May 17th. Designed and planned by Siemens Energy Management Group, the project not only supplied power distribution equipment but also implemented a digital energy management system. The photovoltaic panels were sourced from Siemens’ partner companies.
Most of the electricity generated by this project will be consumed directly within the factory premises. Additionally, the line company has reserved another 1,000 square meters of rooftop space, which could potentially increase the installed capacity of solar panels in the future. The project is expected to have a six-year payback period and save approximately 60,000 yuan annually in electricity costs.
This initiative represents Siemens Energy Management Group's exploration into the field of distributed energy. They aim to extend this model to external industrial clients in the near future, aligning with China’s evolving energy strategy. Historically, China has focused on centralized power generation, but distributed energy is now viewed as a promising future direction.
Mai Mingrui, Executive Vice President of Siemens (China) Limited and General Manager of Greater China Energy Management Group, mentioned that Siemens' circuit breakers and distribution boxes are commonly found in various distributed energy projects across China. Siemens aspires to offer comprehensive distributed energy solutions to the market. According to Siemens, they already possess a full suite of solutions covering project investment, financing, design, operation, and maintenance, along with providing hardware like small gas turbines tailored to customer needs.
Mai Mingrui emphasized that although hardware remains Siemens' core business, the company is transitioning toward service-oriented solutions. He highlighted that Siemens’ strength lies in its historical accumulation of hardware products such as electrical components and gas turbines, coupled with being one of the largest software companies in Europe.
Following the successful implementation of China’s first internal distributed energy pilot project, Siemens plans to develop two more similar initiatives. One will involve a 500-kilowatt distributed photovoltaic project, while the other will integrate combined heat and power technology with an installed capacity ranging from 2 to 4 megawatts. Although Mai Mingrui expressed intentions to roll out Siemens' distributed energy solutions externally, he refrained from disclosing specific business development goals due to uncertainties in the market and competitive pressures.
