Recently, the Qingdao Science and Technology Bureau officially approved the Laoshan District People's Government to establish a virtual reality technology innovation center in line with the "13th Five-Year Plan" science and technology innovation strategy of Qingdao. This move marks a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to become a national leader in VR/AR technology. Since the strategic cooperation agreement between Qingdao City and Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was signed in 2015, the city has seen a rapid concentration of high-end R&D institutions and enterprises in the virtual reality sector. As the only administrative district in China to be selected as a founding member of the China Virtual Reality Industry Alliance, Laoshan District has also been designated as the country's first virtual reality high-tech industrialization base. It now hosts a key national laboratory for virtual reality technology and systems. Over 10 virtual reality R&D institutions, including the National Engineering Laboratory for VR/AR Technology and Application and the Beihang Qingdao Research Institute, have been established or introduced in the area. These institutions have helped cultivate more than 30 VR companies, which are now making their mark in the industry and gaining considerable influence. With the establishment of the innovation center, Qingdao aims to further promote industrial planning, technological breakthroughs, application demonstrations, talent development, and the commercialization of research outcomes. This initiative is expected to play a crucial role in driving the growth and development of the VR industry nationwide. In the coming stages, the Qingdao Science and Technology Bureau will continue to support the construction of the Qingdao Virtual Reality Technology Innovation Center in alignment with the transformation of old and new kinetic energy and the implementation of the “one industry, one policy†strategy. The bureau will provide additional scientific research plans, project arrangements, policy pilots, talent recruitment, and platform development support. Efforts will also be made to enhance daily guidance and follow-up services for the ongoing development of science and technology innovation centers, ensuring that they remain at the forefront of the VR industry's evolution.
